Most factories grade a standard dress block and then lengthen the sleeve. That is why armholes bind, hems kick, and fabric that looked opaque on a hanger goes sheer in daylight. We draft modest blocks with coverage in from sample one, and we hold fabric to an opacity standard suited to this category — not a fashion-dress standard.

Styles We Produce
Open-front and closed abayas are the volume styles. Open-front needs a stable front edge and a belt or magnetic close that does not gape; closed needs a neckline that sits without a separate under-layer. Convertible abayas with a detachable belt or overlay are one pattern plus a trim pack — cheaper than two full styles if you want visual range.
Hijabs and headscarves are a different product: chiffon, crepe, or jersey, sized, hemmed, and optionally embroidered. Do not treat them as leftover dress fabric. Kaftans and tunics share the modest block with a shorter body or an open front. Modest maxi dresses take the same coverage rules — sleeve length, neckline, hem — with a closer waist if the brand wants shape.
Thobes sit on the same woven/crepe line with a different length and collar stand. Prayer sets are a simple full-coverage block; keep the spec simple or the embellishment cost overtakes the garment. Modest activewear and burkini are performance products — they live on the activewear and swimwear pages. We can produce them; this page does not duplicate those specs.
Fabric
Fabric, Opacity and Drape
Heavy crepe is the abaya cloth: it has enough body to hang in a straight line and enough opacity that a single layer covers. Chiffon and georgette are for movement and layering — they usually need a lining or an under-layer; we will say so at sampling rather than ship a sheer front panel. Cotton and linen are daily-wear, breathable, and wrinkle in a way crepe does not.
Bamboo jersey and GOTS organic cotton are the UK/Western ask: softer, everyday, still opaque if the GSM is right. Opacity here is a coverage test, not a squat test. We check the fabric in daylight on a body, at the chest, sleeve and calf — the three places modestwear returns come from.
Embellishment sits on top of the cloth choice. Beading and pearls add weight; they need a fabric that can carry them without dropping the shoulder line. Embroidery on chiffon needs backing or it pulls. We spec that in the tech-pack review before a single metre is cut.
Construction
Length, Sleeve and Construction
Hem length, sleeve length and neckline are pattern inputs, not finishing notes. A 5cm hem change after the block is locked means a new marker. Give us the coverage rule in centimetres (or a wearable sample) on day one.
Sleeve options are full, three-quarter, or a fitted cuff; higher armholes give range of motion over a base layer without flashing. Neckline sits closed, with or without a placket. Layering-friendly ease — looser over a base layer — is a grade choice, not a size up. Modular trims (detachable belt, interchangeable embroidery, an overlay) let a brand offer more looks without a second pattern. That is usually the cheaper way to get range than cutting two abaya blocks.

Private Label, OEM, and Cut-Make-Trim
Private label is the default for boutique modest lines: your neck labels, care labels, hang tags, packaging. OEM follows a locked tech pack — length chart, opacity standard, embellishment placement, size grade for the destination market (Gulf grades differ from UK grades). CMT, if you supply the cloth, runs at a 5,000-piece minimum.

Getting Started
Sampling, Sizing & Lead Time
Sampling is 10–14 days, longer if the style is embellished. The first sample is a coverage check: standing, sitting, arms raised, in daylight. Up to 10 free revision rounds before bulk. Bulk is 35–45 days from fabric receipt on a basic crepe or cotton program; 40–55 days if the fabric is developed or the embellishment is heavy. AQL 2.5 before packing.
Indicative FOB for a 500-piece run, fabric and basic branding included, embellishment extra: basic crepe abaya $15–25; embellished abaya $25–45; chiffon or crepe hijab $5–12. Your quote will differ with cloth, length and decoration — these bands are so you know the order of magnitude before you brief.
