Recycled Cotton vs. Recycled Polyester: A Real Quality Difference
Not all recycled yarn carries the same quality tradeoff, and this is a genuine distinction a buyer should understand before specifying recycled content. Recycled polyester (rPET) is typically produced by chemically breaking down PET plastic and re-extruding it into new filament — the resulting fiber can be close to indistinguishable from virgin polyester in strength and consistency, since the chemical process rebuilds the polymer rather than mechanically damaging existing fiber.
Recycled cotton works differently, and the quality impact is more significant. Mechanically recycled cotton is produced by shredding fabric waste back into fiber, a process that inevitably shortens the fiber's staple length — from roughly 26mm for virgin cotton down to around 15mm at a 30% recycled content blend — and increases the proportion of short, weak fibers. The practical implication: a "recycled cotton" yarn is very rarely 100% recycled cotton in commercial production — most blend in 50-90% virgin cotton or recycled polyester specifically to offset this strength loss, and a buyer asking for high recycled-cotton content should expect a real conversation about the resulting yarn's durability tradeoff, not just a percentage on a spec sheet.
What Changed With Better Cotton in 2026
Better Cotton (formerly widely known as the Better Cotton Initiative) moved to a genuinely audited, third-party certification model starting in January 2025, replacing an earlier self-declared licensing system. The bigger practical change landed in May 2026: only Physical Better Cotton — cotton that is actually traceable through the supply chain via segregation or controlled blending — now qualifies for the on-product Better Cotton label. Cotton sourced under the older Mass Balance model, where certified and conventional cotton volumes could be mixed and accounted for on paper rather than physically traced, no longer qualifies for the label.
The practical impact for a brand: if a yarn or fabric supplier is still describing their cotton as "Better Cotton" without specifying Physical Chain of Custody, ask directly which sourcing model was used, since the label claim itself is no longer valid for Mass Balance-sourced cotton as of this rule change. This kind of certification detail matters more than it used to, since claims that don't hold up to scrutiny are increasingly a regulatory risk, not just a reputational one — the EU's Green Claims Directive and similar rules in other markets are tightening what unsubstantiated sustainability language is legally permitted on a product.
What a Brand Needs Before Claiming "Organic" or "Recycled" Yarn
A sustainability claim on a finished garment is only as strong as the weakest link in its documentation chain. For an organic claim, that means a valid GOTS transaction certificate covering the specific yarn lot used — not just a general statement that the supplier "works with organic cotton." For a recycled claim, it means a GRS or RCS chain-of-custody certificate tracing the recycled content back through each processing stage, since recycled fiber content can otherwise be diluted or substituted without visual detection at the yarn or fabric stage.
Brands sourcing yarn for a sustainability-marketed product line should request certificate copies at the yarn purchase stage, not after the garment is already in production — a documentation gap discovered late is far more expensive to fix than one caught before cutting begins.
