Knitting Defects Explained: Causes and How They're Caught

Knitting defects such as dropped stitches, needle lines, and barre marks are almost always caused by machine condition or yarn tension, not fabric design. They're meant to be caught during fabric inspection, before cutting begins, using a standardized 4-point grading system. If they reach a finished garment, the gap is usually in inspection, not the knitting itself.

The Most Common Knitting Defects and What Causes Them

Nearly all of these trace back to machine condition or yarn quality, not the fabric design itself. A well-maintained knitting floor catches most of these at the fabric inspection stage, before the fabric ever reaches cutting.

Why Fabric Inspection Exists as a Separate Step

Fabric is inspected on a lit inspection table before it's approved for cutting, specifically to catch these defects while they're still cheap to deal with — a defective meter of fabric costs far less than a finished, sewn, and packed garment that has to be scrapped.

The standard method, the 4-point system, assigns penalty points based on defect size and counts them per 100 square meters. Fabric with too many points per roll is rejected before cutting, not after.

What This Means for Your Order

If your factory shows you a fabric inspection report before cutting starts, that's a good sign, not an unnecessary formality — it means defective fabric is being caught before it becomes a garment defect you'd otherwise have to reject at final inspection, much later and much more expensively.

Ask specifically whether 4-point inspection is standard practice on your order, and whether you can see the inspection report. Not every factory shares this by default, and asking for it costs you nothing.

Knitting Defects FAQ

Small, isolated defects can sometimes be avoided by cutting around them during the marker-making stage, which is exactly why fabric inspection happens before cutting. A widespread defect across a roll usually means the roll itself is rejected.

Lower-quality or inconsistent yarn does increase the risk of yarn breakage and tension defects, but machine maintenance is usually the bigger factor — a well-maintained machine running mid-grade yarn often outperforms a poorly maintained machine running premium yarn.

It typically shows up as an unusually high fabric rejection rate reported by your factory, or as a defect pattern at final inspection that repeats in the same spot across multiple garments, which points back to a specific needle or feeder issue rather than a one-off event.
